Need a time capsule to take you back to the blues and jazz of the 60's? Last night
at Gale Street Inn(Jefferson Park across from the station-4914 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Chicago) was where it began, on August 12, 7-9pm. Eldee and Marshall(Eldee on bass
and vocals) Marshall Vente on Yamaha keyboard and superb drummer, Luis Ewerling
(from Brasil). From nostalgia Ramsey Lewis trio melodies like" Wade in the Water"
and "The In Crowd", mixing the blues with Jobim: "Bessie Mae-Mucho" (just for fun)
and some of the best singing by Eldee (imagine Bobby Short, Tony Bennett and Joe
Williams but as one!)
Now before we go: 5 dudes who rhyme with Wex:
Name a Tex, a Hex, a Mex, a Sex and a Beck's!!!!
as in Texan, Voodoo, a Mexican, Sexxy and Becky!!!!
PS - This reminds me of Joe Vito's joke:

Friday, August 9
Devoted this evening to a full night of enter-TAIN-ment. Jeff Watts was born on
January 20,1960, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of legendary drummers
Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey, and according to the keyboardist, David, Pittsburg is
the birthplace of more unbelievable musicians than you realize. There was a
Chieftain trailer strategically parked on Grand outside of the showcase...Should
have photed Tain in front of that. It is the nickname Kenny Kirkland donned him.
From Chieftain came Tain. This was before I met Jeff, but I could see Kenny saying
this. He had a very cool mind and it was brought back several times this night on
compositions such as Tonality of Atonement, and Fushia. And then Maurice Brown, who
I was just asking about, joined in on trumpet for a couple of tunes, Bluetain and
the Impailer, making it a sexytet. During the Side B jam, (also known as Budman's
delight) we can't remember which night it was played, there was some fun energy.
And we can't forget Billy HIggins, Laughin' and Talkin' with Higg. And you would
not want to miss Like the Rose in which Jeff Juan-tainishly vocalizes his prowless.
Don't miss one of the shows Saturday or Sunday. There are five left.
Thursday , August 8
Chicago Symphonic Center Orchestra Hall. Earl Klugh band warmed up the stage
including Earl Klugh, guitar, Lenny Price, saxophone, Al Duncan, keyboards, David
Lee Spradley, keyboards, Lawson Turner, bass, and Ron Otis, drums. A band of a
popular sound, came around to the familiar passage into jazzier Bluenote land when
they played the 25-year-young (has it been that long?) tune Dr. Macumba.
I was ready for an acoustic set. I do have my preferences. Joe Sample, yeeks I
remember him being so different, was FABULOUS on acoustic piano. Had some very
funny stories to tell. Joined by Jay Anderson on bass, and Larry Aberman on drums.
Was as fun as seeing Ramsey Lewis at the CSO...something about that place eliminates
any of the nonsense.
I didn't stick around for the b-day calendar signing - there was mass long lines
forming -- have to multi-task in this city of Jazz...wanted to catch the tail Tain
train at the Showcase.
So glad I made that choice. Although it was after 11pm, I ended up hearing at least
a full hour of music. The band features Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums, David Budway,
piano, Paul Bollenback, guitar, Marcus Strickland, sax, and John Benitez, bass.
The last requested encore A-Train had people swing dancing in the aisles. (There is
usually no one dancing in the aisles at the Showcase, there is hardly room in more
ways than one).

Tues, August 6
It was the usual multi-faceted Chicago Tuesday night choices in life. Worked late
in the burbs and it was either the 2nd set of 4 total sets in two days at the
Hothouse Kahbeer Dawkins live recording or the 2nd set of Tain Watts 13 in six days
at the Showcase. Time is relative and a dimension in the warehouse of Jazz. A
parking gel in front of the Hothouse and the mathematical market share led me down
the Hip-pi-ti-Hop Dawk trail. Will re-tain the tain re-view at a later date.
I am rarely disappointed with any one of Chicago's choices, and tonight was no
exception. Back to the Kahbeer 2nd set review, the tune Dolphy Dance with
Monk...was magical and classic. Previous to this was a hip-hop tune sans the poet;
I thought it could be indexed as hip-it-ti-pi-hop down the seren-dip-it-ti-pi-'trane
trail. Then "In Walked Khari B". (six marvelously mesmerizing musicians as
originally estimated). I HOPE both versions make the CD release...it would be an
interesting to hear the before and after listening experience, one more time. P.S.
Thx Ameen for handling the hose whip apparatus and that Basie phrase, along with the
myriad of other sounds and trumpeting. Thx to the entire ensemble for the molecular
delightenment.
Additional information from the 2002.01.10 adlerplanetarium pressroom: Khari B., the
host of the African Skies Poetry Slam is a Chicago favorite, the self-described
performance poet and “edutainer,” has been performing since the early 1990s. Khari
has been an acclaimed artist and speaker on the public access television show
“Needle and Thread” and has been heard on WHPK’s spoken word radio show. Since 1998
Khari has produced performances that include him and other poets, accompanied by a
full band of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)
According to Khari, “Our works without Substance are empty. Our words without work
are nothing.” With uplifting, encouraging and all-around positive entertainment,
Khari works to educate and stimulate the mind of every listener in his various
audiences, which brings him to the term, “edutainer,” a fusion of educator and
entertainer.
The really good news: Wednesday night is day 2 of 2. And you have permission to
laugh and enjoy yourself. No boundaries. What a concept.

Sunday, August 4th
No Exit Cafe - Unusual pairings with William Perry, sax
and Robert Barry, drums was another inspirational show.
I just loved it. William spoke a bit about seeing John
Coltrane and Eric Dolphy live, as special guests, and how
no one wanted them to stop playing and no one wanted to leave.
Well they create that same sweet sound. You are always
treated to the unusual by the owner, Dave, too. He made a
wonderful salad for me with a side of vegy chili. I had this
very unique drink called ginseng rush - Seeing is understanding.
If you haven't been to the No Exit Cafe on Sunday between
4 and 7pm then be sure to plan to attend, there are only
4 concerts left. YOU WON'T BE BORED.
Saturday, August 3rd
4th Annual Rogers Park Jazz Series - How fabulous for me, it
is only 3 blocks away and only $3 admission. Grazyna Auguscik
vocals, Paul Wertigo, drums, (!) John McLean, guitar, Eric Hochberg
bass, very, very nice. This was followed by Johnny Frigo,
my favorite poet and violinist on the planet. Can't wait to see
his art along with his poetry in a book due for release before Christmas.
Randy Brecker and Frank Catalano finished the night off and received
high marks from my jazz policing partner, Larry.

Enhanced Observations after attending Tuesday night's 2nd set:
New Horizon Ensemble Members tonight included Ameen Muhammed, Steve Barry,
Darius Savage been just as-real, Avreeayl Ra, and in walked Khari B
after the first take. Oh, and of course the foundation of Ernest Kahbeer Dawkins.
Such a favorite. As Larry so adequately transmitted cellularly while I was cruizin'
the LSD north bound traffic home, "Ernest is so original".
Aside note. I am confused at the stated "3rd" generation but forgot to ask.
Khari B is AACM Mwata Bowden's son - isn't that 2nd generation of an original? At
first scan, I would estimate an average of 2 (2nd) generation
but may not be aware of a hidden historical layer. But wait, if you ever watched the
mathematical formula movie on www.jazzbebop.com you would have to add the puzzle
piece: 1 + 1 = 3.
Don't even get me started on the formula of PI in Hip-PI-ti-Hop. Let's see the
formula of a Sphere is 4 PI - r - cubed. And Monk's middle name is Sphere.

As part of HotHouse's Jazz Fest Aftersets, HotHouse welcomes Marlene Rosenberg.
Rosenberg has emerged as one of the most talented and multi-faceted young bass
players on the scene today. She has played professionally throughout the United
States, Europe, Latin America and Japan, performing with innumerable jazz
luminaries, such as Kenny Barron, Frank Foster, Stan Getz, Albert "Tootie" Health,
Joe Henderson, Marian McPartland, Cedar Walton, David "Fathead" Newman, Monty
Alexander, Kevin Mahogony, Frank Morgan Frank Wess, Joe Williams and Nancy Wilson,
to name a few. Her stylistic range encompasses everything from traditional Big Band
to intimate experimental ensembles. She will be performing selections from her
internationally acclaimed, newly released CD, "Pieces Of..." (featuring Cedar
Walton, Javon Jackson, and George Fludas) as well as new originals, and original
arrangements of familiar standards, and spontaneously composed "free" music. Marlene

of the month. They have been featuring the Burgess Gardner Big Band.

Need a time capsule to take you back to the blues and jazz of the 60's? Last night
at Gale Street Inn(Jefferson Park across from the station-4914 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Chicago) was where it began, on August 12, 7-9pm. Eldee and Marshall(Eldee on bass
and vocals) Marshall Vente on Yamaha keyboard and superb drummer, Luis Ewerling
(from Brasil). From nostalgia Ramsey Lewis trio melodies like" Wade in the Water"
and "The In Crowd", mixing the blues with Jobim: "Bessie Mae-Mucho" (just for fun)
and some of the best singing by Eldee (imagine Bobby Short, Tony Bennett and Joe
Williams but as one!)
Now before we go: 5 dudes who rhyme with Wex:
Name a Tex, a Hex, a Mex, a Sex and a Beck's!!!!
as in Texan, Voodoo, a Mexican, Sexxy and Becky!!!!

After Friday 8-9, 2002
Friday, August 9
Devoted this evening to a full night of enter-TAIN-ment. Jeff Watts was born on
January 20,1960, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of legendary drummers
Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey, and according to the keyboardist, David, Pittsburg is
the birthplace of more unbelievable musicians than you realize. There was a
Chieftain trailer strategically parked on Grand outside of the showcase...Should
have photed Tain in front of that. It is the nickname Kenny Kirkland donned him.
From Chieftain came Tain. This was before I met Jeff, but I could see Kenny saying
this. He had a very cool mind and it was brought back several times this night on
compositions such as Tonality of Atonement, and Fushia. And then Maurice Brown, who
I was just asking about, joined in on trumpet for a couple of tunes, Bluetain and
the Impailer, making it a sexytet. During the Side B jam, (also known as Budman's
delight) we can't remember which night it was played, there was some fun energy.
And we can't forget Billy HIggins, Laughin' and Talkin' with Higg. And you would
not want to miss Like the Rose in which Jeff Juan-tainishly vocalizes his prowless.
Don't miss one of the shows Saturday or Sunday. There are five left.
Thursday , August 8
Chicago Symphonic Center Orchestra Hall. Earl Klugh band warmed up the stage
including Earl Klugh, guitar, Lenny Price, saxophone, Al Duncan, keyboards, David
Lee Spradley, keyboards, Lawson Turner, bass, and Ron Otis, drums. A band of a
popular sound, came around to the familiar passage into jazzier Bluenote land when
they played the 25-year-young (has it been that long?) tune Dr. Macumba.
I was ready for an acoustic set. I do have my preferences. Joe Sample, yeeks I
remember him being so different, was FABULOUS on acoustic piano. Had some very
funny stories to tell. Joined by Jay Anderson on bass, and Larry Aberman on drums.
Was as fun as seeing Ramsey Lewis at the CSO...something about that place eliminates
any of the nonsense.
I didn't stick around for the b-day calendar signing - there was mass long lines
forming -- have to multi-task in this city of Jazz...wanted to catch the tail Tain
train at the Showcase.
So glad I made that choice. Although it was after 11pm, I ended up hearing at least
a full hour of music. The band features Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums, David Budway,
piano, Paul Bollenback, guitar, Marcus Strickland, sax, and John Benitez, bass.
The last requested encore A-Train had people swing dancing in the aisles. (There is
usually no one dancing in the aisles at the Showcase, there is hardly room in more
ways than one).

Tues, August 6
It was the usual multi-faceted Chicago Tuesday night choices in life. Worked late
in the burbs and it was either the 2nd set of 4 total sets in two days at the
Hothouse Kahbeer Dawkins live recording or the 2nd set of Tain Watts 13 in six days
at the Showcase. Time is relative and a dimension in the warehouse of Jazz. A
parking gel in front of the Hothouse and the mathematical market share led me down
the Hip-pi-ti-Hop Dawk trail. Will re-tain the tain re-view at a later date.
I am rarely disappointed with any one of Chicago's choices, and tonight was no
exception. Back to the Kahbeer 2nd set review, the tune Dolphy Dance with
Monk...was magical and classic. Previous to this was a hip-hop tune sans the poet;
I thought it could be indexed as hip-it-ti-pi-hop down the seren-dip-it-ti-pi-'trane
trail. Then "In Walked Khari B". (six marvelously mesmerizing musicians as
originally estimated). I HOPE both versions make the CD release...it would be an
interesting to hear the before and after listening experience, one more time. P.S.
Thx Ameen for handling the hose whip apparatus and that Basie phrase, along with the
myriad of other sounds and trumpeting. Thx to the entire ensemble for the molecular
delightenment.
Additional information from the 2002.01.10 adlerplanetarium pressroom: Khari B., the
host of the African Skies Poetry Slam is a Chicago favorite, the self-described
performance poet and “edutainer,” has been performing since the early 1990s. Khari
has been an acclaimed artist and speaker on the public access television show
“Needle and Thread” and has been heard on WHPK’s spoken word radio show. Since 1998
Khari has produced performances that include him and other poets, accompanied by a
full band of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)
According to Khari, “Our works without Substance are empty. Our words without work
are nothing.” With uplifting, encouraging and all-around positive entertainment,
Khari works to educate and stimulate the mind of every listener in his various
audiences, which brings him to the term, “edutainer,” a fusion of educator and
entertainer.
The really good news: Wednesday night is day 2 of 2. And you have permission to
laugh and enjoy yourself. No boundaries. What a concept.
The shows that I have seen have been Supreme Love.
Sunday, August 4th
No Exit Cafe - Unusual pairings with William Perry, sax
and Robert Barry, drums was another inspirational show.
I just loved it. William spoke a bit about seeing John
Coltrane and Eric Dolphy live, as special guests, and how
no one wanted them to stop playing and no one wanted to leave.
Well they create that same sweet sound. You are always
treated to the unusual by the owner, Dave, too. He made a
wonderful salad for me with a side of vegy chili. I had this
very unique drink called ginseng rush - Seeing is understanding.
If you haven't been to the No Exit Cafe on Sunday between
4 and 7pm then be sure to plan to attend, there are only
4 concerts left. YOU WON'T BE BORED.
Saturday, August 3rd
4th Annual Rogers Park Jazz Series - How fabulous for me, it
is only 3 blocks away and only $3 admission. Grazyna Auguscik
vocals, Paul Wertigo, drums, (!) John McLean, guitar, Eric Hochberg
bass, very, very nice. This was followed by Johnny Frigo,
my favorite poet and violinist on the planet. Can't wait to see
his art along with his poetry in a book due for release before Christmas.
Randy Brecker and Frank Catalano finished the night off and received
high marks from my jazz policing partner, Larry.
MARK THE ROGERS PARK JAZZ SERIES ON YOUR CALENDAR FOR NEXT YEAR-

New Horizon Ensemble Members tonight included Ameen Muhammed, Steve Barry,
Darius Savage been just as-real, Avreeayl Ra, and in walked Khari B
after the first take. Oh, and of course the foundation of Ernest Kahbeer Dawkins.
Such a favorite. As Larry so adequately transmitted cellularly while I was cruizin'
the LSD north bound traffic home, "Ernest is so original".
Aside note. I am confused at the stated "3rd" generation but forgot to ask.
Khari B is AACM Mwata Bowden's son - isn't that 2nd generation of an original? At
first scan, I would estimate an average of 2 (2nd) generation
but may not be aware of a hidden historical layer. But wait, if you ever watched the
mathematical formula movie on www.jazzbebop.com you would have to add the puzzle
piece: 1 + 1 = 3.
Don't even get me started on the formula of PI in Hip-PI-ti-Hop. Let's see the
formula of a Sphere is 4 PI - r - cubed. And Monk's middle name is Sphere.

beautiful composition "Sentimentos Brasillerios".
Also being performed that night will be the breathtaking "Day of the
Dead", a fable told in
song and dance featuring Music by Joe Cerqua, choreography by Wilfredo
Rivera, and a 16 foot dancing skeleton designed by Blair Thomas.
Many Cerqua Rivera favorites, as well as some new surprises, are planned
for the evening.

WBEE is a mainstream straight-ahead jazz music radio station, dedicated to playing
the recordings of artists who played in the tradition of Louis Armstrong, Duke
Ellington, Charlie Parker, et al. Further, we play the music of current jazz
musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Cyrus Chestnut, Mark Whitfield,
and others. Finally, we strongly reject and condemn the labeling of some pop music
as "smooth jazz." Jazz music cannot be redefined as a convenient "pigeon hole" for
record companies to confuse people about this precious artform.

Marlene Rosenberg
As part of HotHouse's Jazz Fest Aftersets, HotHouse welcomes Marlene Rosenberg.
Rosenberg has emerged as one of the most talented and multi-faceted young bass
players on the scene today. She has played professionally throughout the United
States, Europe, Latin America and Japan, performing with innumerable jazz
luminaries, such as Kenny Barron, Frank Foster, Stan Getz, Albert "Tootie" Health,
Joe Henderson, Marian McPartland, Cedar Walton, David "Fathead" Newman, Monty
Alexander, Kevin Mahogony, Frank Morgan Frank Wess, Joe Williams and Nancy Wilson,
to name a few. Her stylistic range encompasses everything from traditional Big Band
to intimate experimental ensembles. She will be performing selections from her
internationally acclaimed, newly released CD, "Pieces Of..." (featuring Cedar
Walton, Javon Jackson, and George Fludas) as well as new originals, and original
arrangements of familiar standards, and spontaneously composed "free" music. Marlene
Rosenberg (bass) will be joined by Ernie Adams (drums), Taku Akiyama (alto, soprano
saxophones), and Robert Irving III (piano).

Jon Randolph's cool color photos from our last cruise, are now on Marshall Vente's

Roscoe Mitchell, Harrison Bankhead, Vincent Davis, and Corey Wilkes
Roscoe Mitchell (saxophone) is a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago,
leader of the Note Factory, and well regarded as a jazz master and inspired
composer. Harrison Bankhead (bass) has played in a wide variety of musical settings
from mainstream to free-form jazz, blending different forms of ethnic music (Indian,
African, Celtic, Native American, etc.) with the musicians he has been playing with.
Vincent Davis (drums) is noted for his ability to play a variety of styles with
equal skill and imagination, including avant-garde and straight ahead jazz,
Afro-Cuban, funk,
classical, Latin and African music. Corey Wilkes is a noted trumpet/flugelhorn
player.
