YING - YANG corner of song titles.
My old flame-->.my new flame.
you've changed-->you've not changed.

***********RAVE RE-BOP-BECCA-VIEW REVUE************
==============================================================
TUE MAY 28 Mwata Bowden's lecture at University of Chicago
was an awesome delight and some teach me tonight. Mwata touched
on the AACM (Advancement of Association of Creative Musicians)
fundamentals and roots here in the city of jazz. He played a
contrabass clarinet and his derigido and I don't know the musical
term for rain-maker stick. Maybe it should be called the sun-maker
stick. Then at Andy's, there were two, yes two, baritone trumpet
players. A basie, basic, bassy, kind of evening. I peered in at
Terrell Stafford's band over at the Showcase. I listened to his
field of dreams cd two more times and think about Saturday night
at the showcase. I saw some of this weeks group on the Jazz
Cruise last year, and the bass player, Brandon Owens, a few weeks
ago with Nicholas Peyton.

MON MAY 27 - Witnessed the JUBA - Jazz Unites band at
the Hotel W on Lake Shore Drive. This consisted of
Kahil Elzabar, Robert Irving, Ari Brown and Fareed
Haque. Guest vocalists and the hip-hop duo of
Primeridian joined in. How could anything go wrong
with a lineup such as this? Well, you begin by
putting a deaf sound man at the volume control. Bring ear
plugs and you will get a kick out of the dancing, especially
the finale.

SUN*DAY MORNING* MAY 26 - I vied for an "aint no sunshine
when your gone" organ of a different ring for a media delivery.
Stayed for the baby dedication, and to hear and watch the
music from the balcony. 31st & King Drive.

SUNNY DAY AFTERNOON MAY 26...THEN I figured out why they
call it the NO EXIT cafe. Because you wish the music would
never end. From four pm to six we were treated to Jeff
Parker's tasty guitar and tantalizing tidbits from Nori.
William Perry joined in for sax in the city on the last tune,
written by Tony Williams. Some sort of love song. Maybe
a new kind of love song. THE "UNUSUAL PAIRING" SERIES
CONTINUES SEVERAL MORE WEEKS AND PROMISES TO SERVE UP SOME
OF OUR FAVORITES - DON'T MISS THESE!!!

SAT MAY 25 was a classical fantastical even - ning. A perfect
balance so to speak. Had to think of sad things to keep me
from laughing at one point. Thinking about the strange banner
over the entrance to Mendel Hall at the University of Chicago.
(Something about Women's Masturbaton Day - Come!)
Good thing I was in the middle of the last row of the balcony,
the one with no seats in front of it - becoming my favorite seat in quiet settings.
Was z-mazed how much I enjoyed the orchestra playing Brahms.

THU MAY 23 WAS DOCUMENTED IN THE ARCHIVES. BUGLE
BUG STUDIOS HAS PARTNERED WITH PRATT BEACH STUDIOS
TO CONTRIVE A CONJUNCTION OF KINETIC AND POTENTIAL
ENERGIES. TO PROMOTE WORLD PEACE THROUGH INDIVIDUAL
HAPPINESS, AND TO PROMOTE INDIVIDUAL PEACE THROUGH
WORLD HAPPINESS. (OUT OF THE TREE OF LIFE I JUST
PICKED ME A PLUM). uNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO JAZZ X-TET
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MWATA BOWDEN PERFORMING THE
MUSIC OF DR. BURGESS GARDNER WITH THE DOC AS GUEST
ARTIST...SONGS included reconstructions and refine-
ments of Foxy-no notes on the source of inspiration :)
then it was a family affair: "Vince"-named for BG's
youngest son, "Lamar's Stroll"-named for BG's oldest
son, "Lela Simone"-(little Lela), a grand song about a
grand-daughter, and "Ramal"-Vincent Gardner's middle name.
"HOPE" - my middle name - YOU DON'T MISS ANYMORE!!
(STILL IT'S A REAL GOOD BET, THE BEST IS YET TO COME).

GENERAL REVIEW NOTES
===================================================
Czech-out the updated schedule - and DO notice this weekend highlights
and the Wednesdays in June at the Velvet with Malachi playing Miles to
a different theme - a favorite trumpet player and bandleader on this
planet, always providing a unique and tantalizing twist to his
performances. Did he pick the night that was not yet reserved in June
purposely? Yeah, Malachi. Regardless - Wednesdays in June with Malachi
at the Velvet are now reserved for a prime choice of entertainment.

Well maybe the 4th Wednesday early evening in June will be intersecting
with the WBEE jazz presentation at the Harambe house. YOU CAN CONCEIVABLY DO BOTH

And Thursdays in June at the Chase Cafe with Robert Irving III - a Miles
and Smiles Trooper who throws in art while hopping down the music trail.

And Sundays at the No Exit Cafe - Unusual Pairings Series.

All presentations best enjoyed "LIVE", in living color.
Oh, yes, one more thing...JUNE IS BLACK MUSIC MONTH

BUT 2002 is ZEBRA MUSIC YEAR !! (Auf-wieder-sehen)

EQUAL AND OPPOSITE AND SOMETIMES ENHANCED PLEASURE.
(HOPE'S FIRST LAW OF MOTION) And what a pleasure it was
with HENRY JOHNSON on guitar and even on vocals for one
"close your eyes Joe Williams is still with us" tune,
Greg Rockingham (what a great name for a musician)
keeping the be-bop and bluesy beat, Chris Foreman on
organ in the traditional Jimmy Smith groove and deep
soulful Peter Roothan on tenor sax. Other jazz reviews
submitted include a raving review of Lawrence Hobgood's

guitar at the Green Mill, a good set of vocalist Hinda
Hoffman's Quartet at the Gateway. The spirit continues
at the University of Chicago tonight and TUE MAY 28th.

CLARK FILLING IN FOR LARRY BOWDEN ON TRUMPET, WILLIE

WERE PLENTY OF LOUIS JORDAN TUNES AND I LIKED THAT, AND

THURSDAY MAY 16 WAS ONE OF THE NIGHTS YOU JUST HAD TO
BE AT THE VELVET LOUNGE TO BELIEVE. Not like THERE HAVE
NOT BEEN OTHERS IN THE PAST AND I ALWAYS SAY,
LAST NIGHT WAS THE BEST EVER SHOW. BUT IT IS and IT WAS.
Fred Anderson opened The Velvet Lounge in 1982 as a home for jazz
musicians to perform without commercial constraints. How well the free
jazz was displayed, performed, rendered, surrendered, and served up on
Thursday night. It started out around 9:30pm with host Vincent Davis
on drums, Harrison Bankhead on bass and Ernest Dawkins, fired up from
playing an earlier show that evening and the Hot House the night
before. They played a marvelous first set. When the second set
started the entourage began and it was like every musician I had ever
met in the last few years was getting out his instrument and playing -
such as David Young (trumpet), Maurice Brown (trumpet), Kevin Neighbor
(sax), Aaron Getsug (sax), Isaiah Spencer (drums), and other special
guests...did I mention just-arrived-from-New-Orleans-Maurice? Do you
know what it means-to miss......Maurice? The cowboy of space
and time? Oh well, sorry you missed out. DON'T miss the
CD Release party at the Hothouse on Tuesday June 4th.

My favorite radio people in Chicago. They sponsor all kinds of events
including a monthly big band bash the fourth Wednesday of the month.
They have been featuring the Burgess Gardner Big Band.
If you are not hip to Burgess, trumpeteneur, master composer and
arranger, father of a couple of jazz legend sons, then you have not

been
jazzin with the Zebra Libra. Check out the Wednesday, May 22 concert
at 7pm, if you live in Chicagoland. THE HARAMBEE HOUSE
is located at 11901 South Loomis in Chicago. Take I-57 south to 119th
Street East exit. Go east on 1-57 to Loomis Street, about 1/2 mile
(the second light). Look for the Harambee House sign
and turn into the free parking lot.
