SUN MAY 19 AFTERNOON AT THE NO EXIT CAFE WAS REALLY COOL.
WILLIAM PERRY TRIO WITH HARRISON BANKHEAD AND VINCENT
DAVIS PLAYED FABULOUS RHYTHMS AND THE AUDIENCE LOVED
IT AS MUCH AS I DID. THE "UNUSUAL PAIRING" SERIES CONTINUES
FOR 11 MORE WEEKS AND PROMISES TO SERVE UP SOME OF OUR
FAVORITES - DON'T MISS THESE!!!

FRIDAY MAY 17 WAS "FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE" NIGHT, AN
ENTERTAINING MUSICAL COMEDY, AT THE DRURY LANE THEATRE.
I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO PROBABLY RECOGNIZED SOME OF THE
MUSICIANS BACKING UP THE PLAY - INCLUDING ERNEST - " I LOVE
HOW HE PLAYS ANY KIND OF MUSIC" DAWKINS ON SAX, RODNEY
CLARK FILLING IN FOR LARRY BOWDEN ON TRUMPET, WILLIE
WOODS ON TROMBONE, AND JOHN WHITFIELD ON BASS. THERE
WERE PLENTY OF LOUIS JORDAN TUNES AND I LIKED THAT, AND
THE ACTORS WORKED AT GETTING AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION .

THURSDAY MAY 16 WAS ONE OF THE NIGHTS YOU JUST HAD TO
BE AT THE VELVET LOUNGE TO BELIEVE. Not like THERE HAVE
NOT BEEN OTHERS IN THE PAST AND I ALWAYS SAY,
LAST NIGHT WAS THE BEST EVER SHOW. BUT IT IS and IT WAS.
Fred Anderson opened The Velvet Lounge in 1982 as a home for jazz
musicians to perform without commercial constraints. How well the free
jazz was displayed, performed, rendered, surrendered, and served up on
Thursday night. It started out around 9:30pm with host Vincent Davis
on drums, Harrison Bankhead on bass and Ernest Dawkins, fired up from
playing an earlier show that evening and the Hot House the night
before. They played a marvelous first set. When the second set
started the entourage began and it was like every musician I had ever
met in the last few years was getting out his instrument and playing -
such as David Young (trumpet), Maurice Brown (trumpet), Kevin Neighbor
(sax), Aaron Getsug (sax), Isaiah Spencer (drums), and other special
guests...did I mention just-arrived-from-New-Orleans-Maurice? Do you
know what it means-to miss......Maurice? The cowboy of space
and time? Oh well, sorry you missed out. DON'T miss the
CD Release party at the Hothouse on Tuesday June 4th.

Czech-out the updated schedule - and DO notice this weekend highlights
and the Wednesdays in June at the Velvet with Malachi playing Miles to
a different theme - a favorite trumpet player and bandleader on this
planet, always providing a unique and tantalizing twist to his performances.
Did he pick the night that was not yet reserved in June purposely?
Yeah, Malachi. Regardless - Wednesdays in June with Malachi at the
Velvet are now reserved for a prime choice of entertainment.

Well maybe the 4th Wednesday early evening in June will be intersecting
with the WBEE jazz presentation at the Harambe house. This WEDNESDAY
MAY 22 is one of those presentation with BURGESS GARDNER BIG BAND.

And Thursdays in June at the Chase Cafe with Robert Irving III - a Miles
and Smiles Trooper who throws in art while hopping down the the music trail.

And don't forget to check out the University of Chicago NEXT THURSDAY
with Mwata Bowden's X BIG BAND who are doing Burgess Gardner's
compositions. This is another presentation that you will enjoy most live
in living color. Oh, yes, one more thing...JUNE IS BLACK MUSIC MONTH

BUT 2002 is ZEBRA MUSIC YEAR !! (Auf-wieder-sehen)
(the zebra libra is half Czech and half German descent, )
----->>>>>
WEDNESDAY MAY 15 EVENING IN CHICAGO WAS classified as
a baptism in the water - a complete immersion was it? -- at the
Hothouse from Doctor Dawkins -- though I already had spiritual respect
for Darius Savage on bass - from loungin' at the Velvet. It is always
a sweet treat to see the Ensemble. So many percussive pieces to hear
and see. Avyreeal and his duck. Muhammed and his horn. Dawk and
his saxes. Berry and his trombone. And that savage bass.
----->>>>>>
TUESDAY MAY 14 EVENING IN CHICAGO WAS PHENOMENAL
IF YOU HAD BEEN JAZZIN' WITH THE ZEBRA LIBRA...
You were able to sample DR. BURGESS GARDNER at the University
of Chicago, at the fourth floor of Fulton Recital Hall,
"go under the arch and into the courtyard to find the entrance"
discussing and demonstrating the process of improvisation as
it relates to his extensive experience arranging for big bands.
Don't miss the UPDATED U of C concerts in this list !! (May 23, May 28)
You were able to sample KALYAN PATHENK, percussionist, with
FAREED HAQUE, duo-ing with GORAN IVANOVIC. One of the audience
mentioned this duo was as intriguing, if not more so, than the trio
with FAREED. I, of course, LOVE FAREED, but was inclined to agree
that the showcase of the duo was thoroughly entertaining.
AND...You were able to sample NICHOLAS PAYTON's band at the JAZZ
SHOWCASE - DO NOT PUT OFF SEEING HIM. I KNOW there are alot
of items on the venue this week :) The last 40 minutes of Tuesday's
show was killin'. Nick will brighten your views in more ways than one,
through his gentle trumpet and his canary-and-powder blue suits.
Members in his band I have not seen before include Kevin Hayes on
piano, and Branden Owens on bass. Warfield on sax and Rose on
drums remain steady to contribute to a favorite fun gig to attend.

--->>>CURRENT MONTH AND NEXT MONTH JAZZ SCHEDULE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SAT MAY 18 8pm GRAND RAPIDS
Two legendary Chicago jazz musicians---Saxophonist/Band Leader Roscoe
Mitchell and Tenor Saxophonist Fred Anderson---will perform at a
concert in Grand Rapids on May 18th for the benefit of Blue Lake Fine
Arts Camp. The concert will be held at the historic Wealthy Theater,
1130 Wealthy St. S.E. starting at 8:00 P.M. Tickets are $15.
Admission for students with a valid ID is $7. Tickets may be purchased
at the Wealthy Theater (616/451-8001) or by calling Blue Lake Public
Radio (231/894-5656), or by e-mailing radio@bluelake.org. The Roscoe
Mitchell/Fred Anderson Quintet will include pianist Craig Taborn,
bassist Harrison Bankhead and drummer Vincent Davis. Blue Lake Public
Radio and GRTV/The Community Media Center will record this concert for
broadcast at a later date. The concert, which will feature a wide
variety of improvised music, is made possible with support from The
Gilmore Collection of Restaurants (www.thebob.com) and Vertigo Music,
71 S. Division, Grand Rapids. Additional support is being provided by
The West Michigan Jazz Society (www.wmichjazz.org) and The Urban
Institute for Contemporary Arts (www.uica.org). Chicago Tribune jazz
writer Howard Reich describes Mitchell as having an “incalculable
influence” on the course of jazz music. (ALTHOUGH I MUST ASK
THIS PAID JAZZ CRITIC - HAS HE EVER STAYED FOR MORE
THAN ONE SONG?) “Mitchell is a virtuoso reedist, a groundbreaking
composer and a founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the
organization that helped launch it, the Association for the Advancement
of Creative Musicians (AACM),” Reich wrote in a recent review.
"If multi-instrumentalist Roscoe Mitchell never played another note,
his place in the history of American music would be assured.
His music (is often) organized not by theme or chord changes but
by timbre, phrase and gesture."ohn Litweiler, writing in the December
2001 issue of Jazz Times magazine, described Anderson as “the finest
tenor saxophonist in free jazz/underground jazz/outside jazz today."
Mitchell and Anderson were reunited last year at the Velvet Lounge
after going their separate ways for more than 30 years. In March of
this year, they again teamed up at Chicago's Hot House to celebrate
Anderson's 73rd birthday. Founded in 1966, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp’s
mission is to serve students gifted in the arts who are selected from a
wide geographic area and a broad spectrum of socio-economic,
racial and ethnic backgrounds (www.bluelake.org). Last year, nearly
5,000 elementary and junior and senior high students attended the West
Michigan summer arts school. Blue Lake has two Public Radio
stations---WBLV FM 90.3 in Muskegon and WBLU FM 88.9 in Grand Rapids.

(ALTHOUGH I MUST ASK THIS \
WELL-PAID JAZZ CRITIC - HAS HE EVER STAYED FOR MORE
THAN ONE SONG?) “Mitchell is a virtuoso reedist, a groundbreaking
composer and a founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the
organization that helped launch it, the Association for the Advancement
of Creative Musicians (AACM),” Reich wrote in a recent review.
"If multi-instrumentalist Roscoe Mitchell never played another note,
his place in the history of American music would be assured.
His music (is often) organized not by theme or chord changes but by
timbre, phrase and gesture."ohn Litweiler, writing in the December 2001
issue of Jazz Times magazine, described Anderson as “the finest
tenor saxophonist in free jazz/underground jazz/outside jazz today."

The cowboy of space
and time? Oh well don't miss the CD Release party at the Hothouse
on Tuesday June 4th.

Czech-out the updated schedule - and do notice this weekend highlights
and the Wednesdays in June at the Velvet with Malachi playing Miles to
a different theme - a favorite trumpet player and bandleader on this
planet. Did he pick the night that was not yet reserved in June
purposely? Yeah, Malachi. Regardless - Wednesdays in June with
Malachi at the Velvet are now reserved for a prime choice of entertainment.
Well maybe the 4th Wednesday early evening in June will be intersecting
with the WBEE jazz presentation at the Harambe house. This WED MAY
22 is one of those presentation with BURGESS GARDNER BIG BAND.

----->>>>>

----->>>>>>

My favorite radio people in Chicago. They sponsor all kinds of events
including a monthly big band bash the fourth Wednesday of the month.
They have been featuring the Burgess Gardner Big Band.
If you are not hip to Burgess, trumpeteneur, master composer and

RAVE RE-BOP-VIEW REVUE
WEDNESDAY MAY 15 EVENING IN CHICAGO WAS classified as
a baptism in the water - a complete immersion was it? -- at the
Hothouse from Doctor Dawkins -- though I already had spiritual respect
for Darius Savage on bass - from loungin' at the Velvet. It is always
a sweet treat to see the Ensemble. So many percussive pieces to hear
and see. Avyreeal and his duck. Muhammed and his horn. Dawk and
his saxes. Berry and his trombone. And that savage bass.

Peace.

Remember everyone, it is going to be sunny on Thursday. No rain.
Warm bright moments is what to concentrate on.

I KNOW there are alot
of items on the venue this week :) The last 40 minutes of Tuesday's show
was killin'. Nick will brighten your views in more ways than one,
through his gentle trumpet and his canary-and-powder blue suits.
Members in his band I have not seen before include Kevin Hayes on piano,
and Branden Owens on bass. Warfield on sax and Rose on drums remain
steady to contribute to the designation of a "few of my favorite gigs".

****Check out the latest additions to May and June....
You will need to coordinate and make some choices....
Let's keep the sunshine here by seeing and hearing the hot jazz.
Always call the phone number and check the status of concerts,
especially now that Mercury is in retrograde for the next three weeks---
WE will have to use the POWER OF THE GELS even more.
Not a problem for those jazzin' with the zebra libra.

My favorite radio people in Chicago. They sponsor all kinds of events including a monthly
big band bash the fourth Wednesday. They have been featuring the Burgess Gardner Big Band.
If you are not hip to Burgess, trumpeteneur, master composer and arranger, father of a
couple of jazz legend sons, then you have not been jazzin with the Zebra Libra. Check out
the Wednesday, May 22 concert at 7pm, if you live in Chicagoland. THE HARAMBEE HOUSE
is located at 11901 South Loomis in Chicago. Take I-57 south to 119th Street East exit. Go east
on 1-57 to Loomis Street, about 1/2 mile (the second light). Look for the Harambee House sign
and turn into the free parking lot.

Click once on wma (16.8 MB) if you have the Windows Media Player. Be patient it is an
eighteen-minute song (too much clicking will lock your screen) and cause unnecessary grief.
Keep listening - it is intense.
