July so far in reverse order.

George Coleman on sax, Willie Pickens on piano,
Larry Gray on bass, and Kobie Watkins on drums
were dynamite each night the week of the 16th-21st
at the Jazz Showcase. Hardly a repeat in the Repertoire.
All the classic tunes, played in full capacity.
Lots of unexpected changes and sounds from the tenor.
No practice sessions, they just played and defined
jazz in every gamut. Kobie did a wonderful job at
keeping up and in solos. Larry did some unbelievably
fine bow work. And Willie was his usual beautifully
complex self. If you somehow missed George Coleman
at the Jazz Showcase he will be back at the Chicago
Jazz Festival with Ahmad Jamal.

George Coleman has quite a history. It may be time
to toot his horn so to speak. This is George Coleman's
resume as condensed as I dare do.

He has had numerous awards and honors.

We were very lucky to hear him perform live in such an
intimate setting.

Robert Irving III's School of Cool at the Shedd Aquarium
from 5:30-9:30pm on Thursday featured his daughter, Sharon
and Paloma Perry (daughter of vocal sensation Phil Perry)

Green Mill absorbed a bit of my time the weekend
of the 12th and 13th. You know what I love the most
about seeing various AACM derivatives in Malachi
Thompson's Freebop band? It is continuously mesmerizing.
Just float along with the music - get in the groove.
Malachi on trumpet, Kurt Brown, piano, Bill MacFarland,
trombone. Harrison Bankhead, bass, Leon Joyce, the d
rummer of choice, and Billy Harper, sax, always a treat.
On Saturday Dee Alexander joined in for
"Surrender your love". You must hear it to believe it.
Also joining the band for a few songs was Virginia
resident sax man Ron Holloway, who played with Dizzy,
amongst others.

Then it was over to the Wise Fools Pub to see Fareed
Haque Band. Always a dancing and lively experience.
John Jayne, sax, from Schfvilkus joined the band for
a few numbers.

Then it was back to the Green Mill, why go to sleep
now? to see a song of Sabertooth Super Sax with Cameron
Pfiffner, Pat Mallinger, joining them were Eric Koppa,
Tim Macnamara, and Mark Tuttle on saxes, and they all
did the march around the club. Ted Sirota sounded as
good as ever on drums and Dan Trudell on organ. Brian
O'Hern worked on some percussion.

The Green Mill is one of the classics in the country
- Music every Saturday until 4:30am
And you never know who may show up to join in the fun.
Catch some breakfast and the sunrise at Pratt Beach
to complete the awesome experience.

It was Jimmie, the bartendar's last night, or should
I reclassify as last morning? ..he worked at the
Green Mill for over 27 years. Going to retire and
play some golf. Tee for one and more.

Lots more music to hear. Don't miss George Coleman next
Tuesday-Sunday with Kobie Watkins on drums at the Jazz
Showcase. That ought to be very interesting.

Eric Alexander, sax Harold Mayburn, piano, Dennis
Carroll, bass, George Fludas, drums, at Jazz Showcase
was enlightening and earned total respect from me.
I had never seen Eric lead a quartet before. Now I
know what all the fuss was about. Very, nice sax--
heavily influenced by George Coleman.

Kahil ElZabar's Ascension July 5 was a rocking night.
The Sex Mob - 4 guys from NYC who had the most
interesting way of weaving tunes from jazz, church,
rock, and classical into their music.
(Steve Bernstein, slide trumpet, Briggan Krause, sax,
Tony Scherr, bass, and Kenny Wollesen, drums and chimes)

This was followed by Malachi Thompson and Triad.
(Kurt Brown, piano, Harrison Bankhead bass, Curtis Prince
drums, Dennis Winslett sax)

Both groups were on their way to the Iowa City Jazz
Festival.
