Just added, Robert Irving III's School of Cool
at the Shedd Aquarium from 5:30-9:30pm on Thursday.

Also note that on CONTINUING JAZZ EVENTS,
for (Capt) Bob Johnson and friends,
the night has switched from SAT night
TO THURSDAY night, starting at 7pm - 11pm
to accomodate parking conflicts
caused by graduations and family reunions,
and to keep the jazzy week rollin'

If you have never watched Capt Bob play his
fine acoustic bass, heard his fabulous band,
or experience the visiting friends enhance their performances
while overall adding their spirit and flavor to the music,

Well!
Correct the situation, and schedule the time in real soon..
You just may get hooked on all that cookin'.

July so far in reverse order.
George Coleman on sax, Willie Pickens on piano,
Larry Gray on bass, Kobie watkins on drums are
performing this week at the Jazz Showcase.
Tuesday's show was indeed interesting.
Very excellent musicians and enjoyable tunes selected.

Green Mill absorbed a bit of my time on the weekend.
You know what I love the most about seeing various
AACM derivatives in Malachi Thompson's Freebop band?
It is continuously mesmerizing. Just float along
with the music - get in the groove. Malachi on
trumpet, Kurt Brown, piano, Bill MacFarland, trombone.
Harrison Bankhead, bass, Leon Joyce, the drummer of
choice, and Billy Harper, sax, always a treat. On
Saturday Dee Alexander joined in for
"Surrender your love". You must hear it to believe it.
Also joining the band for a few songs was Virginia
resident sax man Ron Holloway, who played with Dizzy,
amongst others.

Then it was over to the Wise Fools Pub to see Fareed
Haque Band. Always a dancing and lively experience.
John Jayne, sax, from Schfvilkus joined the band for
a few numbers.

Then it was back to the Green Mill, why go to sleep
now? to see a song of Sabertooth Super Sax with Cameron
Pfiffner, Pat Mallinger, joining them were Eric Koppa,
Tim Macnamara, and Mark Tuttle on saxes, and they all
did the march around the club. Ted Sirota sounded as
good as ever on drums and Dan Trudell on organ. Brian
O'Hern worked on some percussion.

The Green Mill is one of the classics in the country
- Music every Saturday until 4:30am
And you never know who may show up to join in the fun.
Catch some breakfast and the sunrise at Pratt Beach
to complete the awesome experience.

It was Jimmie, the bartendar's last night, or should
I reclassify as last morning? ..he worked at the
Green Mill for over 27 years. Going to retire and
play some golf. Tee for one and more.

Lots more music to hear. Don't miss George Coleman next
Tuesday-Sunday with Kobie Watkins on drums at the Jazz
Showcase. That ought to be very interesting.

Eric Alexander, sax Harold Mayburn, piano, Dennis
Carroll, bass, George Fludas, drums, at Jazz Showcase
was enlightening and earned total respect from me.
I had never seen Eric lead a quartet before. Now I
know what all the fuss was about. Very, nice sax--
heavily influenced by George Coleman.

Kahil ElZabar's Ascension July 5 was a rocking night.
The Sex Mob - 4 guys from NYC who had the most
interesting way of weaving tunes from jazz, church,
rock, and classical into their music.
(Steve Bernstein, slide trumpet, Briggan Krause, sax,
Tony Scherr, bass, and Kenny Wollesen, drums and chimes)

This was followed by Malachi Thompson and Triad.
(Kurt Brown, piano, Harrison Bankhead bass, Curtis Prince

Both groups were on their way to the Iowa City Jazz
Festival.

My favorite radio people in Chicago. They sponsor all kinds of events
including a monthly big band bash the fourth Wednesday
of the month. They have been featuring the Burgess Gardner Big Band.
If you are not hip to Burgess, trumpeteneur, master composer and
arranger, father of a couple of jazz legend sons, then you have not
been jazzin with the Zebra Libra. Check out the Wednesday, Jun 26
concert at 7pm, if you live in Chicagoland. THE HARAMBEE HOUSE is
located at 11901 South Loomis in Chicago. Take I-57 south to 119th
Street East exit. Go east on 1-57 to Loomis Street, about 1/2 mile
(the second light).
Look for the Harambee House sign and turn into the free parking lot.
