**** The start of RAVE RE-BOP-BECCA-VIEW REVUE ****

I began Laborious jazz festivities on Thursday, August 29th afternoon at Chicago's Cultural Center Cassidy Theater. I was slightly disappointed that I could not attend the WBEE Burgess Gardner Big Band gala at the Harambee House (it will be repeated on Wednesday, September 25th with special guest trumpeter Orbert Davis, who's CD "Priority" is reaching the top ten on Yellow Dog Jazz Chart) or the Hothouse performance of Ernest Dawkins trio on Wednesday night. However, for every adversity in life, there is an equal and opposite, AND sometimes ENHANCED pleasure...and the jazzy physics did not fail me on Thursday.
I was treated to the delightfully unique visual and audio presentations of KELAN PHILIP COHRAN (Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble (AHE) was the direct link between the Sun Ra Arkestra on one hand and Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF) on the other. Kelan Phil Cohran was a founding member of the AACM- Advancement of Creative Musicians). Cohran provided an assortment of eye and ear candy with his cosmic slides and by playing various recordings, a harp, and the Frankiphone instrument, or Mbira, an amplified version of an African thumb piano, invented by Cohran.
Next was very active AACM guitarist JEFF PARKER, at his wildest fine-ness. Jeff improvised with pre-recorded music to produce an interesting combination of sounds. Jeff was voted into Down Beat's Talent Deserving Wider Recognition category for guitar in the '98 critic's poll. An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music, Jeff has made a dramatic impact on the jazz scene having worked with such outstanding artists as Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, Antonio Hart, Joshua Redman, Billy Pierce, Branford Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, and Fred Anderson. Parker joined New Horizons Ensemble in 1992. AND I shall never deny my love of any of those, including Jeff Parker, who contributed to the recording of “Becky’s Bash” on Ted Sirota’s Rebel Soul’s vs. the forces of evil CD. GEORGE LEWIS stepped up to the musical AACM home plate next. He had a programmed piano that he vibed into submission and changes with his trombon-ified playing. A native of Chicago with a degree in philosophy from Yale, he began studying trombone in 1960. From 1971-75 he studied theory/composition with Muhal Richard Abrams at The School of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Lewis has concentrated upon his activity as a composer/constructor working in the field of computer-music. He is perhaps best known for his "software compositions"--that is, the construction of real-time composing and listening machines (computer programs) that interact with performing musicians in concerts. ROSCOE MITCHELL, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator joined and completed the AACM program on saxophone. He was consistently mind-blowing, so to speak, or should I say, so to hear. Mr. Mitchell's innovation as a solo performer, his role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over thirty years. He is a founding member of the world renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, and Trio Space. Finished off Thursday evening honoring Charlie Parker’s birthday at the Velvet Lounge, listening to a quartet led by trumpeter CURTIS BLACK with guitarist Mathew Wilson, bassist Kurt Schweitz, and drummer Joe Adamik. Curtis hosts a jazz jam session that features Jonathan Cohen, piano, Robert Hodge, bass, and Douglas Mitchell, drums on Sunday nights from 9PM to 12AM at the Woodlawn Tap, located at the corner of Woodlawn and 55th in Chicago. There's no cover, and only the second set is open to guest musicians.
Arrived in Detroit on Friday in time to catch the commencing acts at the Pyramid Stage for the 23rd Ford Detroit International Jazz Fest. FOUR STAGES OF FUN is an understatement. I suppose I am a bit biased originating from the Motor City and all. But whom they bring and how they organize their free concert on fewer dollars than Chicago stands alone. The access in and out is supreme. Even with downtown Detroit undergoing massive construction, it is not too difficult to park, walk right into the concert grounds (no lines or barricade nonsense) and find a spot of enjoyment. The main food concession is underground, so as not to crisp you during the short wait in line. There are permanent lavatories with attendants. The jazz fest continues to ‘round midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and till 11pm on Monday Labor Day. The local jam sessions afterwards last to 4am. CD’s and books can be purchased at the onsite Border’s Books, where you are able to meet and interact with the artists. I purchased the 2003 Herman Leonard Classic Jazz Calendar (only B-day facts on this one) and of course had a marvelously good time getting B-day signatures.

I began Laborious jazz festivities on Thursday, August 29th afternoon at Chicago's Cultural Center Cassidy Theater. I was slightly disappointed that I could not attend the WBEE Burgess Gardner Big Band gala at the Harambee House (it will be repeated on Wednesday, September 25th with special guest trumpeter Orbert Davis, who's CD "Priority" is reaching the top ten on Yellow Dog Jazz Chart) or the Hothouse performance of Ernest Dawkins trio on Wednesday night. However, for every adversity in life, there is an equal and opposite, AND sometimes ENHANCED pleasure...and the jazzy physics did not fail me on Thursday.
I was treated to the delightfully unique visual and audio presentations of KELAN PHILIP COHRAN (Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble (AHE) was the direct link between the Sun Ra Arkestra on one hand and Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF) on the other. Kelan Phil Cohran was a founding member of the AACM- Advancement of Creative Musicians). Cohran provided an assortment of eye and ear candy with his cosmic slides and by playing various recordings, a harp, and the Frankiphone instrument, or Mbira, an amplified version of an African thumb piano, invented by Cohran.
Next was very active AACM guitarist JEFF PARKER, at his wildest fine-ness. Jeff improvised with pre-recorded music to produce an interesting combination of sounds. Jeff was voted into Down Beat's Talent Deserving Wider Recognition category for guitar in the '98 critic's poll. An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music, Jeff has made a dramatic impact on the jazz scene having worked with such outstanding artists as Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, Antonio Hart, Joshua Redman, Billy Pierce, Branford Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, and Fred Anderson. Parker joined New Horizons Ensemble in 1992. AND I shall never deny my love of any of those, including Jeff Parker, who contributed to the recording of “Becky’s Bash” on Ted Sirota’s Rebel Soul’s vs. the forces of evil CD. GEORGE LEWIS stepped up to the musical AACM home plate next. He had a programmed piano that he vibed into submission and changes with his trombon-ified playing. A native of Chicago with a degree in philosophy from Yale, he began studying trombone in 1960. From 1971-75 he studied theory/composition with Muhal Richard Abrams at The School of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Lewis has concentrated upon his activity as a composer/constructor working in the field of computer-music. He is perhaps best known for his "software compositions"--that is, the construction of real-time composing and listening machines (computer programs) that interact with performing musicians in concerts. ROSCOE MITCHELL, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator joined and completed the AACM program on saxophone. He was consistently mind-blowing, so to speak, or should I say, so to hear. Mr. Mitchell's innovation as a solo performer, his role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over thirty years. He is a founding member of the world renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, and Trio Space. Finished off Thursday evening honoring Charlie Parker’s birthday at the Velvet Lounge, listening to a quartet led by trumpeter CURTIS BLACK with guitarist Mathew Wilson, bassist Kurt Schweitz, and drummer Joe Adamik. Curtis hosts a jazz jam session that features Jonathan Cohen, piano, Robert Hodge, bass, and Douglas Mitchell, drums on Sunday nights from 9PM to 12AM at the Woodlawn Tap, located at the corner of Woodlawn and 55th in Chicago. There's no cover, and only the second set is open to guest musicians.
Arrived in Detroit on Friday in time to catch the commencing acts at the Pyramid Stage for the 23rd Ford Detroit International Jazz Fest. FOUR STAGES OF FUN is an understatement. I suppose I am a bit biased originating from the Motor City and all. But whom they bring and how they organize their free concert on fewer dollars than Chicago stands alone. The access in and out is supreme. Even with downtown Detroit undergoing massive construction, it is not too difficult to park, walk right into the concert grounds (no lines or barricade nonsense) and find a spot of enjoyment. The main food concession is underground, so as not to crisp you during the short wait in line. There are permanent lavatories with attendants. The jazz fest continues to ‘round midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and till 11pm on Monday Labor Day. The local jam sessions afterwards last to 4am. CD’s and books can be purchased at the onsite Border’s Books, where you are able to meet and interact with the artists. I purchased the 2003 Herman Leonard Classic Jazz Calendar (only B-day facts on this one) and of course had a marvelously good time getting B-day signatures.
